    ‘GLEICH IST NICHT GLEICH GLEICH’

    Two-phase architecture & urbanism competition

    The competition brief initiates the search for a community or ‘siedlung 2.0’: a masterplan for a high-quality residential development in close relation with the surroundings of Igls, a small town near Innsbruck (Austria).

    ‘Gleich ist nicht gleich gleich’ explores the concepts behind the identity of vernacular villages. These disperse settlements are recognizable by the grouping of volumes which are similar yet not exactly identical, creating a complex and varied urban atmosphere that can act as a reference to the public.

    In order to achieve this, we establish three main characteristics that help us define the mobility, free space and typologies of the proposal:

    ‘Car-free City’: scattered buildings are allocated along an activities axis, marked by a welcoming, central square. Parking provision is fulfilled by an unobtrusive parking lot for guests, located at the entrance, and a communal underground garage for residents. Together they liberate the development from the presence of private cars, favoring a pedestrian-oriented development, suitable for both cycling and children.

     

    ‘Porosity’: fifty dwellings are organized in small blocks that are gently inserted in the existing topography, respecting the scale of the surroundings and taking advantage of the natural slope to improve the accessibility of the site. The porous, low carbon footprint urban structure is engulfed by the forest, resulting in a delicate balance that gives equal weight to what is built and what is natural.

    ‘Diversity’: the low-cost, privately-promoted housing is organized by means of a flexible system that allow us to combine a variety of 50-70-80 and 90m2 apartments, which include accessible, ground floor units, small studios and duplex. Every dwelling is either dual or triple aspect, assuring cross-ventilation. This organization ensures that the main rooms are oriented towards the south, and at the same time enjoy the views towards the north and the surrounding forest.
