WILDGARTEN

Masterplan passed by the Vienna City Council, Austria.

23rd september 2015

After a 5 year long collaborative planning process, the ‘Wildgarten’ Project has been definitely passed by the Vienna City Council as a 10ha masterplan (approximately 1000 housing units) for the suburban zone of Emil-Behring-Weg, Meidling (Vienna). The soil owner (ARE) intends to begin now the development of the architecture projects, whose construction will take place in the 2016-2018 period.

‘The Commons’ presents the story of the collaborative process as a comic, from the winner project of the Europan 10 competition in Vienna and its later development with a multidisciplinary team until its definitive passing by the Vienna City Coucil the 23rd of September, 2015.

The story is guided by the real characters that have taken part in it, including our local partners Mascha&Seethaler, management experts (Raum&Co), mobility (Traffix), landscaping (Land in Sicht), energy or sociology, as well as representatives of the neighborhood, the soil promoters (ARE) and the MA21 office of the Vienna City Council, all of them active participants in the design process.

The comic was made for the Holcim Global Awards 2014-2015 entry, which won the Holcim Bronze Award in the European region. ‘The Commons’ was valued as an example of innovative, sustainable, democratic urbanism. Here we share the digital book:

From Arenas Basabe Palacios we would like to thank the team that, during those 5 years, has taken part in the ‘Wildgarten’ project in our studio, from the competition entry to its implementation as a masterplan, as well as in the Holcim Prize entry and the development of this publication.
