AM ENDE ALLMENDE
Restricted competition for the urbanistic development of “Am langen Rain” in Müllheim, Germany.
June 2015
The “Am langen Rain” Competition seeks to define an urbanistic development for the current territory located at the east entrance of the city of Müllheim, Germany. Sustainability became particularly important and should attend to ecological considerations such as the quality of the open space, traffic functionality and pedestrian access.
Our proposal discards the parcelling of the land, action that fragments the territory marking a clear boundary between public and private. As an alternative to this grid division, we define a branched configuration of nodes with a variable density. Around the nodes, it is arranged an edification hypothesis, diverse in scale, units and housing types. Around the buildings, gardens of different shapes and sizes appear in relation with the community green space.
Consequently, we recover and duplicate the community identity by stimulating the reconciliation of rural and urban space: on one hand, the dwellings are gathered around a more urban access street, while, on the other hand, they share a community green space with a more natural character. The road branching allows the territory to not be fragmented and reduce the presence of the car in favour of the continuity of the pedestrian space.
In the green space definition, we conserve the existent lines of trees and we enhance them with new plantations so they act as green lungs of the new neighbourhood, ensuring the natural quality of the open space structure.
The building hypothesis shows diverse scales of investment, reflected on the different built volumes. It is thus offered a management tool for the mixture of different types of housing (blocks, terraced houses, single-family houses), opening up a greater range of market opportunities so each user can find the house that best fits his needs, taste and investment capacity.
