ISLANDS
Design for the ‘Parque de las Flores’
Alcorcón, 2014
BUILT
The Parque de las Flores is an urban space of ca. 1500m2 placed in the Avenida de las Flores, Alcorcón. The future of the plot was decided through a popular vote. The neighbours determined their preferences and we took them as a starting point for the project.
The uses chosen by the citizenry are concentrated in islands, which use the colour as a sign of identity: green for the elderly ‘biohealthy’ program, yellow for the vegetation and trees, magenta for the children’s activities and cyan for sports.
The result is a sustainable intervention that minimizes costs by concentrating the new equipments in certain points –islands- where the activity intensifies, encouraging the intergenerational exchange and the interaction between the different users. The rest of the green surface keeps its low-maintenance quality and allows a wide appropriation by the citizens.
Here you have some pictures of the ‘islands’, already inaugurated and in use! Special thanks to the photographer Laura Bass for her images.
