Restricted competition for the densification of the neighborhood ‘Josefsviertel’
Moers, Germany, 2013
In Collaboration with Miriam García, landscape architect
The competition for the densification of the neighborhood “Jofsefsviertel” in the city Moers (Germany) was looking for a solution to integrate elderly housing in a neighborhood of idle blocks.
We propose a linear construction, low in height as a new facade for the neighborhood. The system, which parts the structure from the internal partitions allows a high flexibility in the configuration of the housing, regarding the total amount as well as their size, negotiated by the users in an assignment process.
Similarly the appropriation of the free space is negotiated by the community. Instead of defined private gardens and housing units, the users decide about the size and the form of their gardens, which “float” in a common green space, which is programmed with sports, cultural and spare time activities.
The result is a permeable “snake”, which can be reconfigured over time and adapts to the environment, a densification strategy that can be applied to other suburban environments.
Here the publication of the eight proposals, that were chosen. We hope you like it!
