International competition for young architects EUROPAN 11
Turku, Finland, 2011
The competition outlined the development of an area on the outskirts of Turku, Finland. It dealt with the creation of a new community open to the diverse ways of life of the inhabitants..
In the suburbs, private property achieves its maximum expression. Fences and objects define its structure and morphology, replacing the order lost in the city. But in the suburbs community is lost, because it cannot exist without public space.
We propose a project based on the reinterpretation of property. The private radically broken up, becoming an open field of connections and negotiation: a new opportunity for the community and the public.
To do this, a network of private gardens structures the new neighborhood, not only in terms of ownership, but also by identifying its morphology and linking the network of public spaces.
Gardens can be sold or rented by locals but also by outsiders. In the same way, citizens can buy or rent not just houses or rooms, but a number of square meters in the collective housing units.
Citizens use this flexibility to find the right environment for their lifestyle, but also to cope with the changes that occur over time, such as their family structure, budget or living conditions.
The result is an improvement on the post-industrial suburb. House and city will no longer be mere products: they will be open to the process. They in themselves will be a process that adapts to the complex and changing reality of the contemporary city.
