THE TERRITORY INHABITED

The University Francisco de Vitoria published the book ‘The Territory Inhabited. Resilient Cities’  with our article ‘Supports for a collaborative urbanism’ (pp. 68-75), which is based on the conference we imparted at the university on October the 6th 2015, invited by Professor Elena Farini and Pablo Ramos.

We compiled some notable fragments of the article for you:

‘The goal of collaborative urbanism is an urban plan legitimated by democratic quality control guarantees. All actors involved in the process agree the guidelines of urban development, rather than being decided by minorities. Therefore the feasibility of the project is certified from different.’

‘We understand as “urban supports” the definition of a collective pattern open to multiple interpretations. Its function as configurative basis structures the territory proposing a higher order that allows a variety of urban scenarios, reflecting numerous built hypotheses. Since 2007 we have been working on a continuous research on urban supports as a tool for contemporary urbanism with specific examples. Because whether this procedure is abstract, responding to global thinking, it must have a particular implementation, taking into account determining factors of the place, reacting to its environment and the character of the specific area.’

‘Fixing the “urban supports” as a game board and defining its usage rules or syntax is a tool that favors the processes of collaborative urbanism, since it allows the multi-player access, participating actively in the design process and turning urban planning into a more democratic practice. In order to involve as many agents as possible we must have the right tools. These tools will be specified progressively through the process: conferences, presentations, sharing sessions, etc. as well as the realization of actual game boards or interactive applications hat help make decisions to heterogeneous groups with diverse backgrounds, possibilities and capacities. It is a process where the architect – urban planner has a role of coordinator or director of the multidisciplinary team.’
