FINNOO MARINA CITY

Urbaani Helmitaulu

International competition for the development of a marina and residential neighbourhood

Finnoo, Finland, 2012

The competition outlined the joint design of a marina and sustainable neighbourhood in the town of Finnoo, satellite town of Helsinki, in Finland.

As a solution that integrates the new urban fabric, the marina and the existing landscape, we proposed an ‘urban abacus’ to organize the area of intervention. Squares, streets, buildings, docks and canals are jointed by said abacus. The public space also plays an important role, more as a chemical component in this mix than in its physical form. The result is a built environment that is complex, diverse, adaptable, particiapatory and  at the same time, structures, and controlled by planning stages.

We understand the new development as a business between various parties, whose involvement is necessary for the construction of a diverse, democratic city. The urban abacus, which works as an urban support, is open not just to different building scales, but, above all, to different scales of investment.  In this way, small developers, cooperatives and groups of individuals have easy access to the configuration of the city, whilst large developers and the public body ensure a viable and sustainable urban development
